Born in Tunisia, Carmel grew up as one of six children and remembers a happy childhood filled with wonderful memories. As a young man starting out in life, he moved to the UK where he met his wife, Maria. Together they shared a long and happy marriage, raising two children and exploring countries across Europe including Italy and France. A talented linguist, Carmel speaks six languages fluently, something that complemented his love of travel. Throughout his life he also enjoyed playing both the accordion and the saxophone and developed a lifelong interest in French history.

In 2023, Carmel moved into Parkfield House following a fall at home. The fall affected his confidence and he needed support to regain his independence. Moving into a new home was a significant change, but Carmel soon began to settle into his new surroundings. Through his own determination and the encouragement of the team at Parkfield House, he gradually rebuilt his confidence. As the days and weeks passed, Carmel became more involved in daily life, enjoying opportunities to spend time with others while continuing to do the things that mattered most to him.

Today, Carmel is an active member of the Parkfield House community. He regularly attends residents' meetings where he shares his ideas and opinions, helping to shape life within the home. He enjoys taking part in the Equals Art Project with local schools, shopping trips, pub visits, seaside outings and the daily activities on offer.

The support and encouragement he has received have also given Carmel the confidence to try activities he says he may never have considered before. At the same time, he has continued to enjoy the interests that have always been important to him. His Christian faith remains a central part of his life and attending church continues to support his wellbeing. He also enjoys spending time in the home's library reading books about his favourite subject, French history.

Looking back on his journey, Carmel says he feels "safe, happy and enjoys the company of people around me". Reflecting on what he has achieved since moving into Parkfield House, he says"I can still learn and enjoy new activities."

Glendeen the Home Manager, says "It has been wonderful to see Carmel settle into life at Parkfield House. From the moment he joined us, he has embraced everything our community has to offer. Watching him maintain his independence, build new friendships, continue pursuing his interests and discover new experiences is exactly what person-centred care is all about. Carmel's journey is a great example of how the right support and opportunities can help someone continue to live a fulfilling and meaningful life."

Caroline, Activities Coordinator, adds:"Seeing Carmel so happy, independent and actively embracing daily life here is so great to see."

Carmel's journey is a great example of how the right support and opportunities can help someone continue to live a fulfilling and meaningful life. For Carmel, Parkfield House has become a place where he has regained his confidence, maintained his independence and continued enjoying the things he loves while discovering new interests. With the support of the team, he has embraced this new chapter in his life and become a valued member of the home's community.
