Aarti Lal, Parkfield’s very own activities assistant, has been shortlisted for The Care Home Activity Organiser Award at this year’s Great British Care Awards.
She now faces a tough interview with the judging panel later this month with the final results to be announced at a gala dinner in April 2021.
Having started at the home as a care assistant in February 2017, Aarti was promoted to quality & training co-ordinator which she performs alongside her role as activities assistant. She is well-known around the home for her positivity, energy and instinctive ability to engage with residents, tailoring activities to suit their needs.
Aarti involves the residents in all sorts of activities from painting and cake decorating to crafts and arranging visits with the home’s much-loved hens. The activities are designed to stimulate the mind, body or soul. Many take place in a group setting but there are plenty of 1:1 interactions, especially for room-bound residents, who receive regular wellbeing visits.
“This is about ensuring that we provide residents with the best quality of life and memorable wellbeing moments. We encourage them to participate as much as they want, bearing in mind their likes and dislikes,” says Aarti.
“Nothing makes me happier than knowing that I can make a difference by making someone smile. I enjoy listening to the residents’ stories because they are fascinating and help me get to know them better. I like sharing mine, too, and we can really get the conversation flowing!”
